Brittney Fontana helps an RTH afterschooler decorate a paper pumpkin.
A staff nurse at BWH for more than 35 years, Mary Allendorf-Burns, RN, of Tower 15CD, wanted a way to give back to the local community and get to know BWH's neighbors. So she and the 15CD Practice Committee connected with Roxbury Tenants of Harvard (RTH) Executive Director Karen Gately to brainstorm.
The result was an Oct. 24 afternoon gathering of Tower 15CD nurses and children from RTH's afterschool program in the peaceful Francis Street Garden. The garden came alive as the children completed Halloween-themed activities, including a mini-pumpkin scavenger hunt and pumpkin decorating with help from Kate Milne, RN, Brittney Fontana, RN, and Kaylie Stewart, RN. September Wallingford, RN, and Clare Coyne, RN, read books to the children, and Margaret Costello, RN, PhD, and Sarah Thompson, RN, MSN, led a game of "Mother, May I?" Fun was had by all on the crisp fall afternoon.
