BWHers Vivian Chan and Patricia Timmons are among six recipients of awards from the 2012 Greater Boston YMCA Achievers Program, which recognizes the professional and community-based achievements of African American, Hispanic/Latino and other multicultural men and women throughout the Boston area.
Both were recognized during BWH’s annual Celebration of the Life and Legacy of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., on Feb. 10, in the Bornstein Amphitheater.
Chan is a BWH pathology technician who, outside of work, demonstrates a commitment to her community by volunteering in a number of ways. This includes the Berkshire Hills Music Academy, where she helps students with developmental disabilities learn how to complete everyday tasks. She is a volunteer at Northampton Area Pediatrics, and collects items and toys for the Home for Little Wanderers and Toys for Tots. In addition, Chan does fundraising work for the Boltwood Project to help the learning-disabled, and raises money for St. Jude’s Hospital and the Wounded Warrior Project. Chan is also in the process of applying to medical school.
The other BWH recipient, Timmons, a project coordinator in the BWH Cardiovascular Wellness Service, volunteers as a mentor and sponsor for young girls, meeting with them to talk about topics such as college preparation and financial awareness. She is the founder of the Archonette Club in Cambridge, a program for high school girls to help them develop professionally and personally. Timmons also volunteers for the American Cancer Society, March for Babies and the East End House in Cambridge.
At BWH, Timmons is a mentor in the Center for Community Health and Health Equity’s (CCHHE) Student Success Jobs Program and participates in the CCHHE’s Pen Pal Program, where BWHers volunteer to write to second and third-grade students from Mission Grammar School and second-grade students from the Tobin School.
To be honored with a YMCA Achievers Award, individuals must have demonstrated a history of professional achievement, the potential for future development and agree to commit to at least 40 hours of community service to benefit area minority youth.
All of this year’s award recipients will be acknowledged at the YMCA Achievers Recognition Awards Gala on March 13 at the Marriott Copley Place.
