As you may know, the Federal government has mandated changes to the 5010 HIPAA transaction standards (claims and eligibility) and the ICD (International Classification of Diseases) coding system. All covered entities, including health care providers, must convert from ICD-9 to ICD-10-CM (diagnosis) and ICD-10-PCS (procedure) codes by Oct. 1, 2013.
HIPAA 5010 transaction standards exchange administrative and financial information between health care providers and health plans for patient care services. ICD-10 provides greater clinical detail that can be used to measure the quality, safety and efficacy of care.
To handle this complex, multi-year project that is unlike any other recent regulatory implementation, BWH has created a 5010/ICD 10 Steering Committee and a Core Team charged with a systems inventory (systems containing ICD 9 codes), a training plan, communication plan and form inventory.
