Three BWHers are among the 65 newest members of the Institute of Medicine. Election to the organization is considered one of the highest honors in the fields of health, research and medicine.
“It is a great pleasure to welcome these distinguished and accomplished individuals to the Institute of Medicine,” said Institute of Medicine President Harvey V. Fineberg, MD. “Each of these new members stands out as a professional whose research, knowledge and skills have significantly advanced health and medicine and who has served as a model for others.”
With their election, members make a commitment to volunteer on IOM committees, boards and other activities.
John Ayanian, MD, MPP, fellowship director in the Division of General Internal Medicine and Primary Care and senior faculty adviser in the Center for Surgery and Public Health, has published extensively on access to care, quality of care, and racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic disparities related to cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and renal disease.
Nancy Berliner, MD, chief of the Hematology Division, focuses her research on the dissection of molecular pathways involved in differentiation of granulocytes, a type of white blood cell, and on the pathophysiology of the anemia of aging. Her scientific interests include anemia, leukemia, DNA diagnostics, and genetic regulation of blood cell production in the bone marrow.
Charles Czeisler, MD, PhD, chief of the Sleep Medicine Division, studies the neurobiology of the human circadian pacemaker, located in an area of the brain’s hypothalamus called the suprachiasmatic nucleus. He is interested in applying his findings to clinical medicine and occupational health.
