BWH cardiologist and internist Michelle Albert, MD, MPH, was named the recipient of the 2010 H. Richard Nesson Fellowship, which is awarded annually to outstanding and promising health care professionals interested in health care policy or local or state community health research.
“The fellowship has allowed me to pursue innovative research in two areas I really care about,” said Albert, who has already begun studying the impact of chronic psychological stress on race and ethnic disparities on cardiovascular disease, specifically understanding the biological mechanisms that result in chronic life-threatening ailments such as heart disease. She is also examining the impact of health policy at the state and national level on race and ethnic disparities in health.
As part of the program, Albert will be teamed with a senior BWH administrator, physician-scientist or care giver who provides one-on-one mentoring. Albert will report on the purpose, scope and results of her work upon completion of the two-year-program, and portions of her research in the areas of health care reform and stress will be highlighted at the 2010 American Heart Association Meeting in Chicago.
