Obituary
BWH mourns the loss of Jay Joseph Bennett, a Customer Service trainer for Partners Operator Services. He died Nov. 29, 2009, after a valiant battle with cancer.
Mr. Bennett’s colleagues remember his remarkable spirit and the way he always smiled and cared for others.
“His kind smile, patience and infectious laugh were part of what made his ability to train people in Customer Service so amazing,” said longtime co-worker Carolyn MacNeil, supervisor of the BWH Call Center. “He truly enjoyed life and wanted to share that with co-workers, friends and strangers.”
Mr. Bennett, who lived in Boston, joined Partners Operator Services in December 1997.
“Everyone loved him. He was one of the most caring, compassionate and fun-loving people you would ever meet,” said Brigid Troy, paging coordinator at BWH. “He was always there to help anyone who asked him. He would never turn anyone away. It has been an honor and privilege to be his friend, and I feel blessed to have had him in my life.”
Sam Dottin, team leader of Operator Services, recalled how passionate Mr. Bennett was about customer service and its reflection of the hospital. He shared those skills with others when he was asked to train new office support staff in many departments.
“Jay was a firm believer in proper delivery of customer service, and he instilled that through his training of all the new operators,” said Dottin. “He was very gracious and accommodating to all, making sure that the institution was represented positively through the way staff presented themselves to the callers on the phone.”
Prior to joining BWH, Mr. Bennett, who grew up in Cambridge, worked as a customer service representative for MASCO.
Mr. Bennett is survived by his mother, Joan Bennett, his sister, Cheryl Bennett, and many relatives, close friends and colleagues. A memorial service will be held Saturday, Dec. 12, at 12:45 p.m., at the Story Chapel at Mount Auburn Cemetery in Cambridge. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
