Many departments and groups across BWH are collecting money, food, clothing, toys and other items for those in need this season. With overwhelming generosity, they open their hearts and wallets in an outpouring of support. Here’s a look at some of the ways BWHers are giving.
HR, Emergency Department, Health Information Services and 850 Boylston St. are collecting toys on behalf of the Toys for Tots Program.
Radiation Oncology is collecting gift cards on behalf of the Home for Little Wanderers, a non-profit child and family service agency.
Biomedical Engineering is teaming up with the family of Brandon Jakle, a colleague who passed away this year, to sponsor a family for the holidays through HAVEN (Hospitals Helping Abuse and Violence End Now services).
Staff from CWN 7, Tower 8AB, 10AB, 12A, 14ABCD, and 16 CD, Endoscopy, and Shapiro 8, 9 and 10 are purchasing gifts from the wish lists of families through Project Hope.
Patient Care Services is collecting funds to purchase clothing, toys, shoes, boots and warm weather gear for four Tobin Elementary School students and their families.
In its sixth year of helping the Pine Street Inn, the PHS Information Systems team aims to collect 75 boxes of food for its annual holiday donation.
The Center for Nursing Excellence is participating in several holiday drives to benefit Project Hope, the Tobin Elementary School Holiday Drive and the Heifer International: A Dream Basket Flock of Hope Bundle.
The Brookside WIC Nutrition Department staff and other departments gave 15 supermarket shopping cards for $25 each to health center families in need during Thanksgiving.
Neurosurgery teamed up with staff from the Operating Room, ICU and Nursing to donate funds for meals and toys to Action for Boston Community Development (ABCD), a non-profit that serves low-income area residents. Neurosurgery staff will help ABCD distribute these meals and toys to local families this month.
Southern Jamaica Plain Health Center continues its tradition of providing gifts for pediatric patients at the center, while the center’s Adult Medicine staff bought Thanksgiving turkeys and trimmings for 20 families who are SJPHC patients.
Social workers give Stop & Shop coupons through The Cheever Family Fund to patients and families in need at Thanksgiving and during the December holidays.
OB Perinatal HIV Team and the Department of OB/GYN are collecting clothing, toys and other gifts for HIV-infected mothers and their children. They’re also collecting monetary donations for the BWH Perinatal AIDS Assistance Program, which provides emergency assistance throughout the year to patients in need.
Shapiro Cardiovascular Center staff hosted an event to collect winter coats, mittens, scarves and hats to benefit Pine Street Inn and Rosie’s Place.

My husband and I host an annual Toys for Tots Holiday Party at our home in early December. It is a nice way to start off the holiday season and a great opportunity to help those less fortunate have a Merry Christmas.

The Microbiology laboratory took up a collection this Holiday Season and donated it to the Salvation Army.
Brigham and Women’s/Mass General Health Care Center at Foxborough is supporting HUGS (Help Us Get Safe), a Foxborough-based non-profit organization dedicated to helping domestic violence victims in the community, through A Giving Tree program. Two Giving Trees are displayed in the main lobby of the Brigham and Women’s/Mass General Health Care Center at Foxborough, and on the trees hang 105 individual gift tags for local women and children who have been victims of domestic violence. Employees and members of the community have been supporting this program by purchasing the items listed on the gift tags.
