Emily Collier from Patient Access Services sets up her Partners log-in and password during New Employee Orientation.
When Emily Collier arrived for her first day of work in Patient Access Services, she was equipped with everything she needed for a successful career at BWH, thanks to the redesigned New Employee Orientation.
She already had a self-guided tour of the hospital, her Partners network username and password, an ID badge and everyday excellence training.
“I found all of the information extremely useful, especially the everyday excellence training,” said Collier, an admitting officer who was one of nearly 60 new employees who participated in the first reformatted orientation last month.
“This new format creates a red carpet experience for new hires that is less transactional and more welcoming,” said Lisa S. Ponton, JD, vice president of Human Resources.
HR assembled a task force to examine ways to improve the experience of newly hired employees, and the redesigned orientation is a result of the group’s work.
“We examined what was working and ways to enhance it,” said Angela Crutchfield, director of Organizational Development & Learning, and a member of the task force. “We also looked at previous survey responses.”
The new orientation features an option for a self-guided tour of the hospital’s main campus. Security staff attend orientation to provide ID badges, and HR IS staff work with employees to set up passwords and log into PeopleSoft.
In addition, new employees have a chance to visit booths staffed with representatives from the Employee Assistance Program, MASCO, MAFCU, Fitcorp, the Blood Donor Center, HR and Occupational Health. This new format allows for an efficient and interactive orientation. Everyday excellence training helps employees examine the importance of customer service in health care.
“Our goal was to make orientation a more positive and engaging experience,” said Crutchfield. “We’ll continue to make minor changes as we receive feedback, and our new employees will be prepared and ready to focus on the job.”
