Employees, patients and friends and family are invited to the first annual balloon-a-thon to beat lung cancer in women.
Mylar balloons are available for purchase by order form with a donation of $10 or more.
“This event is very important to our lung cancer patients and to women’s health as it shows that there is an active community supporting patients, advocating for treatments and surviving this disease,” said Yolonda Colson, MD, PhD, director of the Women’s Lung Cancer Program and associate surgeon within the Division of Thoracic Surgery. “More women die every year from lung cancer than breast, ovarian and uterine cancers combined, and our mission is to raise awareness about the occurrence of lung cancer in women and provide hope and support for those who have been diagnosed.”
All proceeds from the event will benefit the Women’s Lung Cancer Forum, a group of patients, caregivers, advocates and physicians dedicated to advancing the education of patients and increasing public awareness of lung cancer. In particular, the group aims to erase the stigma of smoking associated with lung cancer as 20 percent of women diagnosed have never smoked.
The event, which includes an advocacy talk on lung cancer, is Saturday, Nov. 21, at 1 p.m. in the 15 Francis St. Lobby. Everyone is encouraged to attend to show their support for patients with lung cancer. For more information, call 617-732-6648.
