The 2009 BWH United Way Campaign reached new heights this year with more than 1,000 donors contributing more than $155,000—record highs for both the number of donors and the total raised for the United Way of Massachusetts Bay and Merrimack Valley.
With $25,000 donated by the hospital, the grand total for the 2009 campaign tops $180,000, besting last year’s effort by $40,000.
“Thank you to everyone who donated and made this year the most successful campaign to date,” said David McCready, executive administrator in the Department of Medicine and United Way campaign co-chair.
The two-week campaign kicked off with an ice cream social Oct. 19. By the time the campaign was over, more than 1,000 BWHers had opened their hearts to help the United Way continue assisting thousands of families afford basic needs and provide programs for sustainable employment, affordable housing and youth opportunities.
As always, the campaign provided donors with raffled items, including parking spots, Bruins and Celtics tickets, gift cards, a television and much more, adding excitement to the campaign. In addition, this year’s campaign saw the creation of a United Way rolling rally cart—built by BWH Engineering—that made its way around the hospital, delivering treats and campaign information to employees.
“In addition to our generous donors, we also thank our campaign ambassadors who helped spread the word about the important work the United Way is doing,” said Bob Donaghue, operations manager in Security and United Way campaign co-chair. “Our success would not be possible without the many ambassadors involved right from the beginning.”
Next year’s co-chairs Lisa Whittemore, BWPO Primary Care department administrator, and Rick Foley, MS, BSN, RN, Radiology nurse manager, already are gearing up for the 2010 campaign.
“We thank Bob and David for their leadership during this campaign and hope to build on their success next year,” said Whittemore.
