Over the last decade, the Mary Fay Enrichment Award has given clinical nurses the opportunity to explore ways to enhance patient care and advance nursing practice at BWH.
In the past year, this award has supported the research and design of communication boards to help nurses better communicate with patients suffering from aphasia or with limited English speaking skills. In the Center for Women and Newborns, an interdisciplinary team developed a perinatal palliative care program to help families cope with the difficulty of their situation, while another group teamed up with STRATUS to develop a Simulation Based Cardiac Neonatal Education Program.
“Over the last 10 years, the generosity of the Karsh family and Dr. Marshall Wolf has enabled our nurses to ask the questions, but more importantly, receive support in finding the answers to these complex questions,” said Mairead Hickey, PhD, RN, chief nursing officer and senior vice president of Patient Care Services.
Last week, nursing and hospital leaders gathered in Carrie Hall to present this year’s Mary Fay Enrichment Awards to three groups of nurses.
Katie Fillipon, MSN, RN, OCN, nurse educator, and Eileen Molina MSN, RN, nurse manager, both from Hem/Onc/BMT, will research ways to improve the delivery of palliative care, while Eileen Miller, BSN, RN, of the Emergency Department, will look at the communication and collaboration between nurses and physicians as a way to improve patient outcomes. Jessica Marchetti, MSN, RN, nurse in charge, and Jennifer Flückiger, BSN, RN, both from the NICU, will examine ways to enhance the discharge process.
During the ceremony, the Department of Nursing presented Estrellita Karsh with a scrapbook to commemorate the award’s decade of success. Karsh said working closely with Nursing has allowed her to meet some of the most motivated, talented and compassionate staff.
“You might think you have been touched by this award, but I think I’m the biggest recipient,” she said. “Every single day, you go above and beyond to care for patients, and that inspires me tremendously.”
