Profiles of Excellence
Associate Librarian Meaghan Muir helps hundreds of staff navigate the BWH Medical Library.
Meaghan Muir is the first person to tell you she doesn’t always have the answers, but as the BWH Medical Library associate librarian, she is good at knowing where to find them.
“The best part of my job is helping someone find an article or research paper so they are able to get on with their busy day,” said Muir, who assists library users in literature searches and answers reference questions, in addition to handling the interlibrary loan program.
Muir’s desire to work at a library began after a career in public relations. After going back to school to earn her master’s degree, she landed her first job in the field at Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital’s Medical Library. About a year later, she was hired at the BWH Medical Library, which carries nearly 2,000 books, thousands of hard copy and electronic journals and hundreds of reference books.
“The important part about my job is that not only am I helping people, I’m also learning about so many new things,” said Muir.
That attitude helps Muir connect with people, said Anne Fladger, MLS, AHIP, Medical Library director. “Meaghan is extremely skillful in answering reference questions, but also continues to learn about new resources and passes that along to meet our users’ needs,” she said.
Library users know they can count on Muir’s expertise in using database research tools.
“Research would be so much harder without help from Meaghan,” said Shamsah Kazani, MD, a researcher and associate physician in the Pulmonary Division. “She is the quiet force behind extensive glossary/bibliography entries in many researches.”
Muir says she is shy about getting compliments and is quick to point out that she just tries to do her best everyday. “I start my day with a positive attitude and really looking forward to learning something new every day,” she said.
