Jose Camacho and Victoria Arthur.
Patient Care Assistant Victoria Arthur is known around the Hematology/Oncology Unit on Tower 6D for her contagious laughter that makes patients smile, excellent patient care skills that she shares with fellow PCAs and for eye-catching, brightly colored scrubs.
“I like wearing them because it brightens the day for my patients,” Arthur said. “I want to do anything I can to make them smile.”
Last week, Arthur was honored with this year’s PCA of the Year Award in a packed ceremony in Carrie Hall. Medical Assistant Jose Camacho of Brigham Medical Specialties was honored with the MA of the Year Award.
“You’re a key part of the team who contributes everyday to the excellent overall experience patients receive while at BWH,” said Mairead Hickey, PhD, RN, chief nursing officer and senior vice president of Patient Care Services, who kicked off the ceremony honoring all 22 nominees. “What you do everyday is remarkable.”
Shannon Rogers-Cruz, senior operations manager for Brigham Medical Specialties, presented the award to Camacho, noting his enthusiasm in providing the highest quality of health care service and his ability to create a welcoming environment for all patients.
“Even in his busiest times, Jose never refuses a minute of his time to patients,” said Rogers-Cruz. “He makes them feel as if they are the only patient he is caring for that day.”
Camacho thanked everyone for the recognition. “I really enjoy being part of the BWH community because we are role models to one another,” he said. “Across the hospital, we provide a strong team effort that I truly believe makes a difference in a patient’s life.”
Debbie O’Connor, RN, nurse manager of Tower 6BD, presented Arthur with the PCA award, adding that Arthur is a team player. “The patients are very pleased with the care they receive from this wonderful PCA and often request her by name,” said O’Connor.
