Profiles of Excellence:
Etai Belinky, community career liaison, interviews a candidate for the BWH Youth Summer Program during a recent job fair.
A Madison Park High School junior sat nervously awaiting her first ever job interview, one that could pave the way for her to participate in BWH’s Summer Youth Program.
Fortunately, Etai Belinky was sitting on the other side of the interview table and immediately put her at ease, enabling the teen to open up about her dream of becoming a nurse and her future goals and expectations.
“When I sense nervousness, I always remind the prospective employee that they are here because they have earned it and not to forget to be themselves,” said Belinky, Workforce Development’s community career liaison, who has been part of the HR team for a year.
Belinky extends this patience and compassion to community residents looking to begin a career at BWH. As a member of the HR team, he helps residents of Mission Hill, Mattapan, Dorchester, Roxbury and Jamaica Plain identify career opportunities at BWH and learn the skills they need to qualify for a particular job.
“In many cases, the people who come in just need an opportunity and someone who believes in them,” he said.
Last year alone, Belinky trained 170 individuals, almost half of them being from the Mission Hill neighborhood. His job entails referring individuals who need additional case management services, skills and education to Project Hope – a community-based organization BWH partners with to address language, literacy, child care and other issues that can prevent someone from becoming fully employed. In addition, through the program, residents have access to classes that cover resume-building, basic computer skills and interviewing skills.
“My job allows me to share the great things our organization does and the opportunities we offer with the community,” said Belinky, who has worked in social services for the past 12 years. “That’s what I love most.”
Workforce Development offers many programs to both employees who are interested in advancing their careers at BWH as well as residents in the community interested in entry-level job opportunities at the hospital. Belinky’s calm demeanor and patience help to make all who come through the doors of the office comfortable and confident.
“Etai creates a welcoming environment for all applicants by being thoughtful and attentive to their needs,” said Beverley Sobers, director of Workforce Development.
Belinky said he is thankful to work with a wonderful team in HR and Workforce Development. “The support I receive from my colleagues is essential to the success of the BWH community program,” he said.
