Hundreds of BWHers are on the right track to a healthier life after last week’s Employee Health and Wellness Fair showed how simple and important it is to stay healthy.
“The event was a huge success because it matched our employees’ desire to stay healthy with programs the hospital provides to achieve that goal,” said Maryellen Cotter, NP, director of BWH Occupational Health, who chairs the 11-member committee that organized the event.
During the event held in the Cabot Atrium, employees stopped by many informational tables featuring representatives from the Smoking Cessation Program, EAP, American Heart Association, Pharmacy Services and many others. Hands-on demonstrations of Zumba and Latin dance workouts, mixed martial arts and kettle bells hosted by Fitcorp, drew a crowd and got many participants moving.
“An estimated 800 visitors attended the fair,” said Keila Viñas, HR’s program manager who is part of the organizing committee. “We hope to make this a yearly event.”
The fair introduced employees to programs they might not know about, including Smartbeat, a blood pressure monitoring program offered at no charge for 12 months, sponsored by Partners’ Center for Connected Health.
The big hit, however, was the fair’s Wellness Passport, which sent participants to each informational station to receive a stamp for a chance to win prizes. The grand prize winner was Mila Levinson from Pharmacy Services who received a $600 bike from Eastern Mountain Sports. Other prizes included Fitcorp memberships, visits for massages and acupuncture at BWH’s Osher Clinical Center and a gift certificate to O’Naturals.
