Danielle Phillips views the American Fashion Art exhibit on display at the Sharf Admitting Center.
As Danielle Phillips waited for her father to register for a hospital visit, the art on the walls of the Sharf Admitting Center transported her mind to a time when illustrator drawings advertised the latest fashions in newspapers and magazines.
“This is amazing work,” Phillips said. “They don’t make art like this anymore.”
For the past few months, this American Fashion Art 1960 – 1990 exhibit has given patients and their families a chance to ease their minds during hospital visits and enjoy the beautiful art work of a world renowned fashion illustrator.
Long-time BWH benefactors and art collectors Jean and Fred Sharf have made the admitting center a welcoming place by providing a rotating art exhibit from their personal collection and from art they have donated to the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, where Jean Sharf is an Honorary Overseer and Fred Sharf is vice-president of the Board of Trustees.
This exhibit—the fifth since the center re-opened in 2002—encompasses nearly 50 framed original fashion illustrations and offers a glimpse into three decades of advertising drawings. It includes the work of Richard Ely, Phil French and Mia Carpenter, who, at one point in their careers, made advertising fashion illustrations for retail giants like Lord and Taylor, Saks Fifth Avenue and Neiman Marcus, in addition to fashion magazines.
“The exhibit is spectacular,” said Christine Collins, director of Patient Access Services. “It provides a welcome distraction from troubles and worries and generates many smiles and comments. All visitors to our department are very appreciative of the generosity of Jean and Fred Sharf.”
All current fashion drawings displayed at the center are originals and property of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. The art work will remain on display until the end of this year, and employees are encouraged to stop by and see it while the department is open.
