STRATUS Medical Director Chuck Pozner, MD, left, guides Canada’s Minister of Health Leona Aglukkaq as she practices on the virtual reality bronchoscopy trainer.
During her recent visit to Boston, Canada’s Minister of Health experienced one method of training health care providers receive for placing a central line, performing a bronchoscopy and surgical knot-tying.
“It was such a wonderful experience,” said Leona Aglukkaq, who toured the BWH STRATUS Center for Medical Simulation last month along with other Canadian health officials. “To be able to tour the facility was truly a unique and memorable visit.”
STRATUS Medical Director Chuck Pozner, MD, said it was an honor to host such an important figure in Canada’s health system, who toured the center for an informational visit.
“We’re dedicated to improving the quality and delivery of health care through the use of medical simulation, which provides exposure to cognitive and technical skills, teamwork concepts and clinical decision-making for individuals and multidisciplinary teams. We are also actively advancing the field through clinical and educational research,” said Pozner.
In addition to hands-on practice, Aglukkaq received a personal demonstration and tour of the STRATUS Center’s state-of-the-art facility, which includes computer controlled patient simulation systems, two training suites, a simulated operating room, a micro-simulation laboratory and a task-oriented skill lab.
Aglukkaq also received a welcome from Chief Medical Officer Anthony Whittemore, MD, who said the minister’s visit speaks volumes of STRATUS.
“It is a great tribute to Dr. Ron Walls, Dr. Chuck Pozner and the entire STRATUS team to host the Minister of Health from Canada, whose visit was prompted by our unique state-of-the-art simulator so crucial to the education of the next generation of health care providers,” said Whittemore.
