The Carl J. and Ruth Shapiro Cardiovascular Center is a “green” building, the first of its kind constructed in a hospital in New England. The building meets Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, or LEED, guidelines by relying on natural light and low-energy fixtures, glazed windows and shading that limit changes in temperature, high-efficiency air handlers and conveyance systems, and plumbing fixtures that reduce water consumption. Public education is an important component of LEED certification; this mural, located on Shapiro 1, draws on the four elements of the hospital’s mission – patient care, teaching, research and community – to inform patients, visitors and staff about what LEED elements went in to creating this sustainable facility.
