Two gifts of $1 million each were announced by Brigham and Women’s Hospital leaders on March 3 at The Breakers hotel, site of the hospital’s fourth annual dinner celebration in Palm Beach, Florida. The generous benefactors were Ruth and Carl Shapiro and the evening’s co-chairs, Michele and Howard Kessler. Nearly 300 guests attended the event, which this year took “Leading the Pursuit of Discovery” as its theme. Emceed by President Jeffrey Otten, the program featured remarks by Samuel O. Thier, MD, president of Partners HealthCare System, Michael Zinner, MD, chairman of Surgery, Michael Bell, board chairman, and Victor Dzau, MD, Brigham and Women’s director of Research and chairman of Medicine. Dzau described revolutionary advances in medicine now underway, fueled by innovations in biotechnology and genetics. Dzau’s talk and video presentation featured the inspiring story of BWH patient Sally Mettler Joyce. Joyce suffered a stroke at age 42 but escaped debilitation, thanks to a clot-busting drug developed in clinical trials led by the hospital. Next year’s event, set for March 2, 2001, will be co-chaired by longtime BWH supporters Elaine Schuster and her husband, Gerald, a member of the board of trustees
