In her research, BWH’s Laura Barger, PhD, explores the use of light to help NASA astronauts and space personnel adjust to the unusual day length on Mars, which lasts 24 hours and 37 minutes. Barger, an associate physiologist in the Division of Sleep Medicine, described the challenges that the longer day presents for sleep and circadian rhythms and discussed how humans could use light to adapt for a trip to outer space at the Museum of Science last month. Her presentation was part of the museum’s ongoing “Forces that Change Us” lecture series.
