BWH Pharmacy Department staff enjoyed a week of food, pampering and recognition during the annual celebration of Pharmacy Week Dec. 15 to 19.
“The week gives us a chance to come together and celebrate our success during the year,” said William Churchill, MS, RPh, executive director of the Pharmacy Department.
Staff participated in a scavenger hunt, received relaxing shoulder massages and competed by answering questions about their line of work in the annual Pharmacy Jeopardy match. The main event, however, was the annual pot-luck luncheon, to which employees bring a signature dish. Four judges crown the best in each category: appetizer, entrée and dessert. This year, the event drew a record of nearly 45 dishes, ranging from appetizers that included a strawberry salad, bite size empanadas and an assortment of dips, entrees like lobster macaroni and cheese, chili, shrimp scampi, and a sweet line up of desserts.
“The competition was really tough,” said Kim Olson, a pharmacy technician, whose chili took the prize for best entrée.
Others winners included Deb Cios, pharmacy resident, for shrimp and avocado salad as best appetizer, and Patty Krause, senior pharmacist, for chocolate gingerbread cake in the dessert category.
Olson and Krause also were recipients of the department’s Going the Extra Mile (GEM) Award, which honors employees who are dedicated to the department and have gone above and beyond to help colleagues and patients.
Chris Vitale, senior pharmacist, Kevin Anger, clinical pharmacy specialist, Ann McDonell, clinical pharmacy specialist, Matt Ditmore, pharmacy technician, Pablo Chacon, pharmacy technician, and Lisa Marie Harper, pharmacy technician, also received GEM Awards this year.
“GEM recipients put in many hours of their personal time to help improve all areas of this department,” said Churchill. “They are also eager to learn and mentor and bring a positive vibe to Pharmacy.”
