As the Friends of BWH Gift Shop closed its doors in December, Friends President Kathleen Monbouquette decided that the unsold merchandise should be given to those in need.
“This year, so many people were having financial difficulties that we decided not to try to sell the rest of our products, but to donate them instead,” she said.
She worked closely with Laura Taylor, LICSW, social worker in the NICU, to identify schools, shelters and other organizations that would benefit from the more than 2,000 stuffed animals, plus clothing, books, toiletries, car seats, frames and other items left in the gift shop.
“Many children and families received these gifts in time for the holidays,” said Taylor, who, along with her social work colleagues, gave items to BWH obstetrics patients in need. “Many of them are affected by homelessness, poverty, chronic illness and domestic violence, and I’m sure they had a happier holiday because of Kathleen’s thoughtfulness and generosity.”
