BWH has trained all of its financial counselors to help patients navigate through the complicated health insurance options available to them under the new Massachusetts Health Care Reform Act, which went into effect this month. This landmark change in state law requires all Bay State residents to obtain health insurance, and it has been estimated that as many as 500,000 people in the state were without health insurance of any kind last year.
“Many of our patients will have a lot of questions about Health Care Reform and how it affects them,” said Edith Kenneally, BWH’s administrator for Ambulatory Registration and Financial Counseling. “We want to make sure we can answer their questions and get them the care they need.”
BWH financial counselors now understand the ins and outs of the various public plans offered through the Health Connector, such as Commonwealth Care and Commonwealth Choice, and they are able to assist patients in either the application or exploration of these plans.
Staff should direct patients with questions about their health insurance and the state’s health care reform law to the main line for financial counseling at 617-732-7005 or 1-866-736-1510.
