In December 1941, David Coyle began a lasting tradition of donating his O negative blood. Last month, the 81-year-old hit his 10-gallon mark at BWH, and all that blood has gone to premature babies in the NICU.
“I am blessed with nine healthy children,” said Coyle, who donated 25 gallons of blood to the Red Cross before becoming a regular at BWH 19 years ago. “When I found out my blood was for newborns, how could I say no?”
Andrea Berman, supervisor of donor recruitment, said, “David’s such a special donor and so important to us, especially because all of the NICU blood comes from the Blood Donor Center.”
The center celebrated Coyle’s gift with a gift certificate to a local seafood restaurant, a horse and buggy ride, brownies, flowers and a special 10-gallon donor pin. “He usually makes us the brownies when he comes in, but today, we made them for him,” said Linda Perry, blood donor recruiter. “It’s his turn to enjoy this special day.”
