In the first State of the Nursing Department address delivered at BWH, Mairead Hickey, PhD, RN, chief nursing officer and senior vice president of Patient Care Services, outlined 2007-2008 goals for the department to a capacity audience in the Bornstein Amphitheater last week.
The goals Hickey detailed are based on feedback from staff nurses. “What’s most important to me is to assure your voices are heard in the decisions made about nursing practice,” she said.
Last year, during her first few months in the role, Hickey met with nurses throughout the department and formulated a Nursing Department vision based on their feedback. This vision to provide excellent care to patients and families with the best staff in the safest environment is aligned with the department’s goals and will guide its work throughout the next year.
“Our accountability as a clinical discipline is to always improve care based on new knowledge, so we are continuously building on a foundation that is already strong,” Hickey said. “We will work with nurses in all roles throughout the department in this process.”
Hickey praised nurses for their central role in the world-class care provided by BWH.
“No one else is with the patient 24 hours a day, seven days per week and knows the most intimate details of the patient’s life,” she said.
The 2007-2008 goals are in four general areas including relationship with patients and families, mutual respect and communication, education and ongoing leadership in patient and staff safety.
Hickey will present the State of the Nursing Department address again on May 31, at 11:30 a.m., in the Anesthesia Conference Room, CWN-L1.
