Ask Yourself: How does the hospital plan, support and coordinate patient education?
The Health Promotion and Education Committee is a multidisciplinary group that provides strategic direction for the development of the BWH’s educational programs. The committee develops and approves policies and programs that impact all service lines and practices. A division of Patient Care Services, the Health Promotion and Education Committee provides consultation and support to all clinical service lines. Committee staff will also interface directly with patients and families in the Bretholtz Center Health Information Library (scheduled to open November 2000), which is being established to provide user-friendly health information for patients and family members. Support for Patient and Family Education is also offered through care improvement teams. The teams include members of various disciplines who are working on various aspects of specialty care, including patient education. Care improvement team members work with nurse managers, administrators and staff to prioritize materials that must be supplied at the unit level for inpatients or ambulatory practice sites. Additionally, BWH receives support from Partners HealthCare System departments, who are actively involved in providing resources for patient and family education. For more information on patient and family education, call ext. 5290.
