Lourdes Bastien
The patients who interact with Lourdes Bastien, a PCA on Tower 16B, happily report that she is “exceptional and outstanding.” Her co-workers note her consistently good attitude and wonderful bedside manner. But to Bastien, this month’s Service Hero, placing patients first is just part of a day’s work. Bastien, who is originally from Haiti, has worked at BWH for the past nine months after working in a nursing home for eleven years. She truly enjoys her work and the patients she cares for, and she is known for handling every situation she encounters with care, precision and a smile. “I just do my best to take care of the patients—what they need, if they have pain—and get the nurse right away if it’s something serious,” Bastien said. “The nurses here are all so nice and very patient. The entire staff at BWH—doctors, nurses, kitchen workers, housekeeping, secretaries—they all do a wonderful job. I’d say nearly all of the people who work here are happy, and that’s a wonderful aspect at work.” “Lourdes is very good to the patients, and they look for her every day they’re here,” said Mary Medeiros, RN, an evening nurse-in-charge on 16B. “She always has a smile on her face. The PCAs work hard on their shift—it’s always busy, and sometimes it’s hard to keep up with everything. But she’s always eager to help the patients, no matter what.” One patient who underwent hip replacement surgery at BWH earlier this spring was particularly grateful to Bastien for all of her attentive care. “Her pleasant and easy-going manner helped me to feel comfortable in asking her for anything I needed,” the patient wrote. “I highly recommend that she be honored for her hard and diligent work. She is one of the reasons I would recommend BWH to any of my family and friends.”
