Beyond The Walls of BWH
Three nurses were selected from a pool of outstanding applicants as this year’s recipients for the Mary S. Fay Enrichment Award. The awardees were selected in March by Estrelita Karsh Gaby Harrison, RN (former recipient), Nancy Kruger, DNSc, RN, Marshall Wolf, MD, Pat Reid Ponte, PhD, RN and Mary Fay, MS, RN, Carolyn Hayes, PhD, RN and Diane Lancaster, PhD, RN from the Center for Excellence in Nursing Practice. Winners were presented their awards at the May Annual Nursing Recognition Event. This year's awardees are:
Barbara Wrobleski, MSN, MLIS, RN
Barbara Wrobleski, MSN, MLIS, RN from 7C Surgical ICU. Wrobleski will be investigating her proposal, “Information Literacy for Nurses.” Included in her proposal is an assessment of the current comfort with and use of electronic resources available to BWH staff nurses. Her goal is to create an environment that lets nurses maximize their usage of accurate, concise reference sources that are or will be directly accessible on the nursing unit. The Enrichment Award included attendance at the Medical Library Association Conference in May.
Norma Gerton, MS, RN
Norma Gerton, MS, RN, Nursing Administration. Gerton proposed attendance of two BWH nurses at the Cross-Cultural Health Care Program in Seattle, Washington. This week-long program provides insights, tools and structure to assist practitioners and educators attempting to facilitate the ongoing development of culturally sensitive practice environments. This award is one part of a comprehensive approach to address the expressed wishes of staff nurses for more information on how to manage their diverse patient populations.
Tansy Walker-Bois, RN
Tansy Walker-Bois, RN, OB/GYN and Lactation Support Services. Walker-Bois submitted a proposal titled, “Development of a post-partum support program to complete the continuum of care for the breastfeeding families at BWH.” Her proposal includes visiting two well-established out-of-state programs—one in Atlanta, GA and the other in Kirkland, Washington. Walker-Bois will share information gathered from these site visits with the BWH Lactation Support Team with the hope of furthering and improving our patients' initiation and continuation of breast feeding.
