Mazie Anckle, BSN, RN, a clinical staff nurse at Southern Jamaica Plain Health Center, consistently serves the health care needs of patients and their families and her commitment doesn’t stop when she leaves the center.
In addition to working tirelessly to help Spanish-speaking patients navigate their health care, Anckle is an active member of Health Ministries, a group that organizes free health screenings for African-American and Latino patients. She also volunteers for her local food pantry twice a month.
“Mazie is an extraordinary person,” said her nurse manager, Regina Harvey, MHA, RN. “She is the most compassionate, sensitive and professional nurse I have worked with. She goes above and beyond for patients.”
These attributes earned Anckle, a registered nurse for 28 years, one of the two Hispanic Heritage Awards established by the Department of Nursing and Patient Care Services to celebrate the contributions of staff from Hispanic and Latino backgrounds. The second recipient was Mishel Burgos, an administrative assistant and insurance coordinator in Cardiac Surgery.
“Both Mishel and Mazie represent the best of who we are, the best of what we try to be and our commitment to our patients,” BWH President Gary Gottlieb, MD, MBA, said during the October celebration in Carrie Hall. “Thank you for sharing your great talent and your commitment with all of us, our patients and their families.”
The awards were presented during a ceremony that also featured guest speaker State Rep. Jeffrey Sanchez (D-Jamaica Plain) who spoke about growing up in the Mission Hill neighborhood and his Puerto Rican heritage. He thanked the staff from Hispanic and Latino backgrounds for their work.
“The dedication and cultural understanding you bring to your job is remarkable,” Sanchez said. “You bring peace of mind to those who need it the most in our community.”
Anckle, a native of Honduras, said she was honored to be selected among so many other dedicated care providers. “Being able to educate, care for and communicate with patients in their own language is rewarding for me, as are their expressions of satisfaction and gratitude,” said Anckle. “And it’s such a pleasure working with staff who are caring and supportive.”
