Otten completes term as MHA chair
Pike Notes
Accountability and advocacy were the predominant themes during BWH President Jeffrey Otten’s year-long term as chairman of the board of the Massachusetts Hospital Association (MHA), which ended last week. The association, under Otten’s leadership, tackled a variety of issues, including securing a relief package for the Balanced Budget Amendment of 1997; advocating for better Medicaid rates of reimbursement to Massachusetts hospitals; bringing the issues surrounding medical errors out in the open and before the state legislature; and passing tighter regulations of managed care companies doing business in Massachusetts. “This was a very difficult year for hospitals financially, and in Massachusetts we faced many issues, including Harvard Community Health Plan being placed in receivership, that threatened to divide the hospital community,” said MHA President Ron Hollander. “It took a special kind of leadership to keep the community focused on its goals during this tumultuous time. The strides we made this year reflect Jeff’s passionate advocacy for the service mission of all of the hospitals in the state.”
