“Entering the Mind Zone: Neuro Emergencies,” BWH’s Second Annual Neuroscience Conference, was held on Thursday, May 25. The popular conference attracted a sold-out audience of nurses and physicians, as well as world-renowned speakers from BWH’s Neurosurgical and Neuroscience departments. A unique learning event that offers an opportunity for enhanced collaboration between physicians and nurses, last year’s conference was so well-attended that a second annual event was subsequently planned. Lectures at the conference covered both Neurosurgical and Neuroscience issues, including tumors and hydrocephalus, acute stroke mimics, infectious diseases in neurological patients, and comatose patient evaluations. Speakers included Peter M. Black, MD, PhD, neurosurgeon-in-chief; Philip Stieig, PhD, MD, associate chief, Neurosurgery (pictured above); Martin A. Samuels, MD, chairman, Neurology; Shaun Golden, RN, BSN, nurse-in-charge, Neuroscience ICU, and more. “One of the big draws for this conference is the participation of both nurses and physicians,” said Mary Pennington, RN, BSN, CCRN, staff educator, Neuroscience. “It was intellectually stimulating, with BWH speakers that people fly all over the country to hear. The conference is also a great way to recruit nurses to BWH—our nurses were able to really showcase our specialty areas and attract talent.”
