Lawren Hugh Daltroy, MPH, DrPH, passed away on September 22 at his home in Allston, Massachusetts after a long struggle with cancer. Daltroy joined BWH as the director of Educational Research of the Robert Brigham Arthritis and Musculoskeletal Clinical Research in 1982, later serving as associate director from 1988 until present. He was also an associate professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School as well as an associate professor at the Harvard School of Public Health. Daltroy was an internationally recognized authority on health education and enhancing communication between physicians and patients. He performed groundbreaking studies on patient self-medication in hospitals, spousal support for cardiac patients and worksite health education. He was also a distinguished teacher, mentoring generations of graduate students and physicians in doctor-patient communication and clinical research methods. The family has suggested that remembrances be made in the form of a gift to the Lawren H. Daltroy Fellowship, endowed in his honor.
