As National Physician Assistants Day approaches on October 6, BWH salutes the 55 physician assistants (PAs) who support our doctors each and every day in their quest to be timely and effective in rendering patient care.
“The physician assistant has become an increasingly important component of our health care team,” said Andy Whittemore, MD, chief medical officer. “We are truly fortunate to have such a dedicated group who provide consistently superb care to our patients.”
As licensed professionals, PAs perform a wide variety of services, including taking patient medical histories, performing physical examinations, ordering and interpreting lab tests, diagnosing and treating illnesses, assisting in surgery and writing prescriptions.
Physician assistants at BWH are concentrated in Surgery and Medicine, with 14 in Cardiac Surgery; 6 in Thoracic Surgery; 5 in Neurosurgery, 7 in Interventional Cardiology; 5 in Non-Invasive Cardiology; 3 in Metabolic Support Services; 3 in Congenital Heart Disease; 2 in General/GI Surgery; 5 in Orthopedic Surgery; 2 in Interventional Radiology; 1 in Neurology; 1 in Vascular Surgery; and 1 in Plastic Surgery.
