BWH Bulletin caught up with three recent graduates of the Student Success Jobs Program – Madonna Bonsu, Francis Pina and Binh Tran. Madonna Bonsu, the Aspiring ObstetricianFrancis Pina , the Potential SurgeonBinh Tran, the Future Nurse
Nearly two dozen students from Boston public high schools explored different career opportunities in health care this year, while gaining valuable work experience in a hospital setting, through the Student Success Jobs Program (SSJP) at BWH.
These students were lauded at a June 13 graduation ceremony that culminated a full academic year of experience. “SSJP strives to provide unique opportunities in health careers for students from Roxbury, Dorchester and Mission Hill,” said Amy Belyea, youth programs manager, BWH Office for Women, Family and Community Programs. “We currently partner with five high schools and also work closely with the Private Industry Council (PIC) to recruit for the program.”
Following an interview process in the fall, students accepted into the program undergo both BWH and SSJP orientation, after which each student is assigned to a hospital department and provided a supervisor, whom they work with during the academic year. Supervisors work closely with the students offering guidance and mentorship, assigning daily tasks, and answering job-related questions. “Whenever possible, students are assigned to departments that coincide with their career interests,” said Belyea. “SSJP students have worked in a variety of BWH departments including General Surgery, Radiology and Pharmacy among others.”
Each month, students attend seminars, focusing on preparing for college, health careers, domestic violence, teen health and other topics. Guest speakers include representatives from community agencies and colleges, as well as BWH physicians, researchers and staff. If you are interested in becoming a supervisor for a student this fall, please contact Amy Belyea at (abelyea@partners.org).
