BWH’s United Way Campaign co-chairs say the campaign is all about providing opportunities to those in need and changing lives for the better.
“As long as one of us is in need, we are all in need,” said co-chair Jackie Somerville, PhD, RN, chief nursing officer and senior vice president of Patient Care Services. “I give because we are all bonded by the beauty and fragility of our common humanity.”
Once again this year, BWH is partnering with United Way of Massachusetts Bay and Merrimack Valley through a hospital-wide coordinated fundraising campaign. United Way works to improve the conditions of the communities the hospital serves by focusing on increasing opportunities for children and youth and improving the financial stability of individuals and families.
The 2014 campaign at BWH officially launched Nov. 3 and runs for three weeks, coinciding with the dates of open enrollment (see related story below). Somerville, along with Stan Ashley, MD, chief medical officer, and Allen Smith, MD, MS, president of the BWPO, are this year’s co-chairs. They have set an all-time high goal of raising $205,000 and increasing participation among employees.
This year’s slogan, “BWH and United Way: Uniting Communities through Service,” was submitted by Diandra Grinage, of Sleep Medicine, and selected from dozens of entries in a contest leading up to the campaign’s launch. Throughout the campaign, several activities will take place across BWH’s distributed campus, including ice cream socials and giveaways of dozens of prizes, including a month’s worth of free parking, Bruins, Celtics and Red Sox tickets, and restaurant gift certificates. All donors will be entered for the grand prize: airfare for two anywhere in the continental U.S.
BWHers have already begun to receive direct, personalized emails with a link to set up their own giving pages. Online donations can be made through payroll deduction, credit card or check. Printed pledge cards will also be available. The co-chairs emphasized that no donation is too small.
“It’s about lifting children and families up to achieve their dreams,” said Smith. “I support United Way because I believe it represents the very best organizations that are committed to making life better for those in our community who will benefit the most.”
