Albert Marcotte
BWH mourns the loss of friend and donor Albert A. Marcotte, PhD, an educator, entrepreneur and philanthropist with a mission to help others improve the world around them. Dr. Marcotte died peacefully at BWH on Aug. 3, after a long battle with pancreatic cancer. He was 74.
Dr. Marcotte, who lived on the South Shore his entire life, was president and founder of Advanced Management Systems (AMS), an international financial services consulting firm. He earned his doctorate and post-doctorate degrees at the Sloan School of Management at MIT and held three masters degrees. He taught for more than two decades at MIT.
Shortly before his passing, Dr. Marcotte made a generous gift of $10 million to BWH to help fund innovation and research. He also established BWH as the residual beneficiary of his estate.
"Al was a remarkable man in so many ways," said BWH President Betsy Nabel, MD. "His extraordinary gift will allow us to seize opportunities that align with our priorities, from recruiting sought-after researchers to funding research with great potential. Al has given us the flexibility to explore new approaches to the world's toughest diseases, and I am enormously grateful."
Senior Vice President of Development Jim Asp said: "We learned so much from Al, and it is our great honor to be in a position to carry out his legacy and vision."
Dr. Marcotte is survived by his companion, Katherine Wagner; sister, Elaine, and her husband, Paul; niece, Deborah; and nephew, David.
