The BWH community celebrated the graduation of five residents from the Doris and Howard Hiatt Residency in Global Health Equity on June 4.
Part of BWH's Division of Global Health Equity (DGHE), the residency program honors Howard Hiatt, MD, associate chief of the DGHE, and his wife. It was established in 2004 to train residents in the medical and non-clinical skills needed to improve health care in under-resourced communities including Haiti, Rwanda, Peru, Lesotho and other locations.
More than 50 attendees, including BWH and Partners In Health (PIH) leaders, faculty, staff, students and family members, gathered in the Shapiro Breakout Room to commemorate the accomplishments of this year's graduates: Patrick Elliott, MD, MPH; Jessica Manning, MD, MSc; Duncan Maru, MD, PhD; Charlotte-Paige Rolle, MD, MPH; and Emily Wroe, MD. Having completed the program, they are now eligible for certification by the American Board of Internal Medicine.
After opening remarks from BWH President Betsy Nabel, MD, guests listened to anecdotes from DGHE chief and PIH co-founder Paul Farmer, MD, PhD, as he introduced each graduate before presenting them with their diplomas.
The ceremony also included the presentation of the seventh annual Marshall Wolf Award in Social Medicine and Global Health Equity by Joseph Rhatigan, MD, associate chief of the DGHE and director of the Hiatt Residency program, to DGHE associate physician Chadi Cortas, MD, MSc, MPH.
