George H. Kaye
BWH mourns the loss of George Kaye, who served as vice president of Human Resources at BWH for nearly two decades. He died Feb. 14 at the age of 71.
Mr. Kaye was born and raised on Long Island, New York. Prior to joining BWH in 1978, he was vice president of Human Resources at the French and Polyclinic Hospital in New York. He was hired by former BWH President H. Richard Nesson, MD, around the time of the merger of BWH's three predecessor hospitals.
"He was an outstanding boss and a great mentor to so many people," said Eileen Burke-Sherman, now retired, who worked with Mr. Kaye for 15 years as director of HR. "He was focused on employees' welfare and committed to hiring a diverse workforce. He was forward-thinking and very supportive of women's issues."
Added Marshall Wolf, MD: "He was a wonderful human being. I think people who worked with George in his era respected and loved him."
After working at BWH, Mr. Kaye moved on to Partners HealthCare, where he became corporate director for Learning and Development. He later served as dean of the School of Management at Lesley University, founded the consulting company, Kayeincorporated, and worked in executive coaching with Vistage International. He was president of the American Society for Healthcare Human Resources Administration for several years.
"George was one in a million," said Janice Rogers, director of Compensation at Partners. "In those very early days of BWH, he created an HR department built on a strong foundation of trust, respect and kindness. He was always there to support employees from all levels of the organization."
Joan Stoddard, of the Office of the General Counsel at Partners, credits Mr. Kaye for getting her interested in employment law when she joined BWH in 1987. "He was always most interested in what was fair to the employee and that he and the hospital did the right thing. He wanted the hospital to be a good place to work."
Mr. Kaye is survived by his wife, Lise, and their children, Christine and Justin. A memorial service will be held March 1 at 1 p.m. at Our Lady of Victories Church, at 27 Isabella St., in Boston. In lieu of sending flowers or donations, the family requests doing a good deed for a family member or friend in his memory, which was Mr. Kaye's wish.
