Ten BWH employees – six from Environmental Services, two from Linen Services and two from Transportation Services – graduated from the second annual Partners in Care Patient Care Assistant (PCA) Training Program on Friday, March 14. This 14-week program, during which employees spent eight hours of their own time each Thursday training to be a PCA, is funded by a workforce development grant through Fleet Charitable Trust and Human Resources and is a collaboration among BWH, Bunker Hill Community College (BHCC) and WorkSource Partners.
“I think this class has learned a lot about themselves through the training they have received to help them take care of patients,” said Tom Sullivan, RN, class instructor. “I have seen them put smiles on the patients’ faces, and in turn, have seen them smile because of it.”
Six of the ten graduates have already completed and passed the PCA certification, making them eligible for employment as PCAs at BWH. In addition, the program carries seven BHCC credits.
“The compassion BWH shows to patients has inspired me to become a caregiver,” said Maria Fernandez, a PCA Training Program graduate, who spoke during the commencement ceremony. “This program has given me the opportunity to continue helping people at BWH, while adding more meaning to my life.”
