Attention employees who live in the area and have children who’d like to play for the Mission Hill Little League
As Mission Hill Little League celebrates its 50th season this spring, BWH radiologist Paul Spirn, MD, is eager to begin his second year as a coach of the Mission Hill Red Sox. Seeking a way to get involved in the community while using his more than ten years of baseball coaching experience, Spirn first discovered the Mission Hill Little League on the Web.
“I’ve been coaching since my son, who is now 22 years-old, was in little league,” recalls Spirn. “Baseball is a game I’ve always enjoyed, and it just made sense to volunteer for a league near the hospital to get more involved in the local community.”
The Mission Hill Little League is a parent-run baseball organization for boys and girls, ages 7 through 12. The league is divided into two groups – the “major” league and the “minor” league – based on age. Children, ages 11 and 12, play in the major league, while 7-and 8-year olds play in the minor league as “rookies” and 9-and 10-year olds as “intermediates.” Opening day is April 26, with the season running through the end June. Each team plays an average of two games each week, plus a third game or scheduled practice, all taking place on weeknights.
“We really focus on skill building and overall participation with the kids,” said Spirn. “There is nothing more rewarding than watching a child delight in the excitement of learning something new and succeeding at it.”
Spirn and fellow coach, George Brennan, led last year’s team to the title of major league champions, only losing two games during the 2002 season. The team was presented the George Brennan Award, named after their long-time coach, for achieving first place in the league.
“Paul has really been a great role model for the kids,” said Dennis Pultinas, president of Mission Hill Little League. “They know he is a doctor at a hospital in their neighborhood, and that has really helped further connect Brigham and Women’s to the community.”
On May 9, the Mission Hill Little League will host a 50-year celebration at the Elk’s Club in West Roxbury, inviting all players, coaches and volunteers – past and present – to attend.
The league is currently seeking additional coaches, volunteers and board members to help with the 2003 season.
