BWH mourns the loss of Colby W. McCarthy, a BWH security officer who passed away Nov. 12 in a motor vehicle accident. He was 24.
Born on July 20, 1987, Mr. McCarthy was a graduate of Whitman-Hanson Regional High School, where he was regularly listed on the Honor Roll. Mr. McCarthy enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, beginning his active service in September of 2005, just three months after graduating from high school.
As a Marine, Mr. McCarthy was a field radio operator and later cross trained as a sniper and spotter with 2nd Battalion, 1st Marine Division’s Weapons Company, Scout Target Acquisition Platoon. He was deployed overseas and served in Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Mr. McCarthy attained the rank of Sergeant and received an honorable discharge after serving the terms of his enlistment in September 2009. Upon returning home to Hanson, Mass., he began to further his education at Massasoit Community College in Brockton, where he made the Dean’s List.
In 2010, he joined Securitas Security Services Inc. in Boston at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and later transferred to BWH.
Mr. McCarthy is survived by his parents, Kevin and Debra; his sister, Kaitlyn and her husband and children; his brother, Patrick; and his sister, Kacie.
