Therese Fitzgerald, PhD, MSW, joined BWH this fall as director of the Women’s Health Policy and Advocacy Program at the Connors Center for Women’s Health and Gender Biology.
Fitzgerald provides leadership and strategic direction for the Women’s Health and Advocacy Program, which is a core component of the Connors Center. The program’s mission is to inform and advance policy at all levels – local, state and national – to promote the highest standard of health and health care for all women. The program informs women’s health policy by leveraging the clinical and research expertise across BWH, focusing on topics where gender biology plays a key role.
“We are collaborating with policy leaders and women’s health organizations throughout the country to address issues that disproportionately affect women as patients, caregivers and managers of their family’s health,” Fitzgerald said. “As part of that work, we hope to collaborate with other faculty across BWH who focus on women’s health.”
Fitzgerald previously worked as health policy research director for the Massachusetts Medical Society, where she oversaw research in health policy, health systems, health care quality and cost and practice environment issues. Her clinical background is in social work, and she has served in positions including associate director of the Center for Addictions, Research and Services at the Boston University School of Social Work.
She received her bachelor’s degree from the University of Massachusetts at Boston, her master’s degree in social work from Boston University and her PhD in social work and sociology from Boston University.
