BWHers broke from their busy day Nov. 11 and came together to celebrate and honor veterans at BWH and around the world.
“This day means a lot to me because I have a lot of memories of people I served with and of the many people I cared for as a flight nurse,” said Jim Gosnell, RN, a nurse in the Department of Anesthesiology, Perioperative and Pain Medicine, who served in the Air Force for 33 years and retired as a Lieutenant Colonel.
The event took place in the Peter Bent Building Lobby before hundreds of BWHers. Operations Manager for Security and Parking Bob Donaghue, a retired colonel in the U.S. Marine Corps, led the special ceremony, which also featured keynote speaker Mairead Hickey, PhD, RN, chief operating officer and executive vice president.
During the ceremony, participants watched a video of BWH veterans presenting Andy Whittemore, MD, former chief medical officer and U.S. Navy veteran, with a flag that flew at BWH on Oct. 13—the 236th birthday of the U.S. Navy.
In addition to enjoying a flag-shaped cake courtesy of BWH Catering, staff were also treated to a special “guest appearance” of historical figure Dr. Joseph Warren.
Warren was played by Andrew Miller, MD, a Navy veteran from the Department of Anesthesiology, Perioperative and Pain Medicine. He told the audience of Warren’s role in the American Revolution, where he served alongside other American patriots. Warren was killed in Battle of Bunker Hill. His brother, Dr. John Warren, later founded Harvard Medical School.
