While academic radiology continues to be the engine that drives innovation in imaging technology, physicians from specialties other than radiology are introducing some of the most cutting-edge applications of MRI.
That’s why the BWH Radiology Department invited surgeons Bohdan Pomahac, MD, and Andreas Gomoll, MD, and pulmonologist George Washko, MD, to talk about how they are using MRI during a meeting with staff from Siemens MRI.
Radiology hosted the Siemens MRI Research and Development Division team for a day of tours and physician presentations last month as a way to enhance collaboration among engineers and physicists with radiologists and researchers.
“These physicians and researchers are the ones pushing the systems we build to the limits of their clinical capabilities,” Bram Stolk, PhD, director of Research and Development for Siemens MRI, told his staff. “Our work should be continuously responsive to the needs of physicians like them.”
During their presentations, each of the three physicians shared a “wish list” of technical improvements, relative to their respective specialties, that would enhance the quality of images and information provided by MRI.
Members of this Siemens team individually work on-site at many academic radiology departments throughout the world. Every six months, they select one of the departments to host the entire team, a prestigious achievement for the chosen department. This was the first time that Siemens selected BWH Radiology to host the meeting.
“The development of imaging technologies and their applications has always been rooted in robust, transparent collaborations between industry and academic radiology departments,” said BWH Radiology Chairman Steven Seltzer, MD. “This meeting is an opportunity to collaborate at that 30,000-foot level, where the conversation is more about the strategy behind anticipating the next round of technical improvements that will support the cutting edge applications of MRI technology engaged in by academic radiology departments like ours.”
