Delaney, held by her mother, Nicole Bowers, gives Janelle Moulder five.
When their youngest daughter, Delaney, was born in October 2009, Nicole and Anthony Bowers got to know the staff in BWH’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) very well. Born at just 33 weeks, Delaney stayed in the NICU for two weeks before transferring to another hospital closer to her parents’ home in South Yarmouth.
In January, more than a year after Delaney’s birth, the Bowers family returned to BWH to deliver a donation to the NICU in her honor.
“The care and compassion my family received at the Brigham was amazing,” Nicole said. “We wanted to give back to the hospital that did so much for us.”
The Bowers hope the money they raised in Delaney’s name will go toward a new kangaroo chair. In the NICU, kangaroo chairs are used by parents while they practice kangaroo care, a technique in which preterm infants are held skin-to-skin with an adult.
During their visit to BWH, the Bowers met with Robert Insoft, MD, FAAP, medical director, NICU and Neonatal Respiratory Services, and Cathy Coleman, RN, as well as Debbie Thornton of Chaplaincy Services. They also saw Janelle Moulder, MD, a resident in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology who was there during Delaney’s birth.
“It is always so heartwarming to visit the wonderful doctors, nurses and staff who played such an instrumental part in what was a scary, emotional and exciting time in our lives,” said Nicole. “We are already looking forward to our next visit.”
