On Jan. 30, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute opened the doors of the Yawkey Center for Cancer Care, a sophisticated clinical facility designed with extensive involvement from patients and families to increase the availability of new therapies in a healing, safe environment.
The attractive 14-story, 275,000-square foot facility, located at 450 Brookline Ave. on the corner of Jimmy Fund Way, will house most of the adult outpatient care provided at the Dana-Farber/Brigham and Women’s Cancer Center. BWH will continue to provide inpatient care.
“This beautiful new facility, combined with the freshly renovated single patient rooms on the inpatient side of our medical oncology units, helps us achieve our vision of providing the best environment for care to cancer patients,” said Janet E. Porter, PhD, chief operating officer at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and vice president of Oncology at BWH.
“The Yawkey Center for Cancer Care will enable our clinicians to provide patients and their families with the finest care and treatment options available in a safe, welcoming, patient-centered environment, as well as facilitate the translation of laboratory advances into new, more effective clinical treatments sooner,” said Edward J. Benz Jr., MD, president of Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.
The Yawkey Center has 104 exam rooms, 139 infusion chairs and 17 consult rooms. It houses most of the adult treatment centers; a clinical research center that has tripled in size to conduct complex, early-stage clinical studies; and centralized registration, pharmacy and laboratory services.
In addition, the Yawkey Center is home to a new dining pavilion and an expanded range of patient and family services, a two-story healing garden, new interfaith chapel and two floors of physician offices.
“We welcome all BWH staff to come by and walk through the new facility,” Porter said.
