The Cabot Atrium on Wednesday reverberated with a harmonious message of hope from the Sinikithemba Choir, a group of Zulu men and women from South Africa who are HIV positive. The group’s name is Zulu for “give us hope” or “we give hope,” and that’s just what they did for a crowd of BWHers who clapped along to the performance, captivated by the powerful lyrics. The choir’s performance at BWH was arranged by Sibusiso, Inc., a nonprofit group that works to improve the quality of life for those infected and affected by HIV/AIDS. BWH’s Stephanie Ahmed, nurse practitioner in Plastic Surgery, is president of Sibusiso. The performance was one of the hospital’s special United Way campaign events.
The choir members are part of a support group for those with HIV/AIDS at McCord Hospital in Durban. For many, this support group is the only place they feel safe talking about their HIV status.
