Finebergs Establish Fellowship with $1.2-million Gift to BWH
Thanks to a $1.2-million gift to Brigham and Women’s from benefactors Jerry and Sandra Fineberg, the hospital’s first surgical oncology fellow will augment her education with training on two continents. In addition to treating patients in Boston, home to world-class cancer care, Sara Russell, MD, will work in Hong Kong, where liver, stomach and esophageal cancers are more common than in the U.S.
“It’s an immense privilege to be able to save and extend patients’ lives,” says Russell, who will work in surgery, pathology, radiation therapy and chemotherapy. She also will advance her research on the immune system, which may slow tumor growth.
“During my fellowship, I’ll continue to learn from the experts here and build on their tremendous expertise,” says Russell, who did her surgical residency at BWH. When her term ends, another talented surgeon will receive the two-year fellowship, envisioned by Surgery Chairman Michael Zinner, MD, and funded in perpetuity by the Finebergs’ gift.
“Jerry and I want to support the best and brightest to ensure the hospital’s legacy of excellent cancer care,” said Sandra Fineberg. The reception area for the Brigham Medical Associates will be named in their honor.
