Misty weather didn't stop the family and friends of Stevan E. Downey from gathering Sept. 16 at the first Annual Stevan E. Downey Memorial Golf Tournament. The event drew nearly 150 participants to the Hillview Country Club in North Reading and raised $23,250 for BWH's International Mesothelioma Program directed by David Sugarbaker, MD. Downey, a 26-year veteran of the Lynn Police Department who served as a Marine in the Vietnam War, succumbed to mesothelioma in March 2004.
His family organized the event to generate awareness of the disease and raise money for research. After Downey was diagnosed, his family searched for information about this rare form of lung cancer caused by exposure to asbestos particles. “We found Dr. Sugarbaker's program and were thrilled that it was in Boston,” Downey's son Chris said.
