For Josette Renda, RN, BSN, it's the little things that improve patient satisfaction on 4B.
In a casual conversation, one patient who was not eating or drinking well mentioned he liked root beer. “So, Josette made certain she got him a root beer as part of his next meal,” said Diane Barsam, former nurse manager on 4B.
Going above and beyond comes naturally for Renda. This winter, one patient had his hopes dashed when, contrary to his initial care plan, he had to remain on 4B for New Year's Eve, the day when his family celebrates his son's birthday at home.
To improve the patient's and family's spirits, Renda ordered a cake so the patient and his family could celebrate his son's 12th birthday on 4B. “She's very compassionate, a true Service Hero,” Barsam said.
Renda, a resident of Rowley, has worked as a staff nurse in Urology and Plastic Surgery for three years. She's a tireless advocate for her own patients and always helps her fellow nurses answer patient lights. Going beyond her conventional tasks is natural for Renda.
“It's just part of the job,” a humble Renda said of ordering the impromptu birthday party and other small, but meaningful touches that she adds to a patient's experience at BWH.
